Make Up Ideas

I have been thinking about makeup ideas for our fashion film. Mac had a trend called glitter and ice which I thought would be good to look at for inspiration. The link below gives a youtube tutorial on how to get this look.

Type of Model

TYPE OF MODEL

I  think for our fashion film we will need an ugly model. I know that sounds strange but  I think our film will look much better if we have an obsucre looking model, as it is a sci-fi genre. I think someone like model Lindsey Wixon would be perfect, as she is very obscure and interesting looking.

Gareth Pugh for Mac

FASHION FILM
I have found another fashion film that would be good for inspiration for ours. It's Gareth Pugh for MAC and I really like the lighting, outfits and music.

After the meeting with louise before i went to Berlin myself, Jordan and Francesca all sat down and tried to think of a storyline that we could then start writing up plans of what is needed, the storyline is based on love and emotion but using the robotic element on the wonder lab trend. This fashion film shows what we were thinking might be nice to portray in our fashion film so it isn't just something to watch is a short fashion film with meaning.

'Trend Research - Wonderlab'

I have been researching our chosen trend firstly on WGSN.

"WonderLab creates a pathway through the exciting yet forbidding jungle of modern science and technology. It is the key to a fascinating visual world that was once fantasy but now creates our reality, and gives us practical options for integrating science into everyday lifestyles.
This trend follows on from the Laboratory and Eco Hedonism macro trends and constitutes a modern splicing of science and nature".

Below are various images that reflect the trend, from points of view other than fashion.

NICK KNIGHT & SHOW STUDIOS TOPSHOP FASHION FILM

I went on the Topshop website today, and on their homepage at the moment is an advertisement for a fashion film they have produced in collaboration with Nick Knight and Show Studios to celebrate 10 years of supporting British fashion (NEWGEN). Underneath the video it says:

I think the lighting in this fashion film is brilliant the way that it is dim with their own sort of 'bluey' coloured lights gives a really chic effect. I think this lighting would be good for our wonderlab theme. I also absolutely love the glittery wall they have in the fashion film, I think that could work with our theme too.

What do Fashion films do ?

NOT only do fashion films make a fashion statement! But movies have the power to show a great style and show a great story!
The stories behind the most stylish movies
Film has the capacity to make not just a star of its actresses/models, but a fashion icon too. From Hepburn and Kelly to Roberts and Knightley, via Farrow and Deneuve, some of Hollywood's most successful stars owe a lot to their on-screen style.
Not only movies make style WANTED but also the fashion films.
Fashion films all about the story combined with the style of the clothes. Models which suite the mood are also very important. Without the Model there is no theme, no idea, no style, no direction. There is nothing if you do not have a STORY, STYLE, FASHION, MODEL/s, GOOD camera angle and LOCATION.

We, the SPECTATORS, look at a fashion film and think 'Wow I need that collection of clothes' WE are captivated by everything.

WHY?
Well it might be because we like the storyline or love the Model or WE just love the complete combination of the idea.

Now we know what a fashion film can do and what it is supposed to do.In this fashion film there is hardly a story or is there? They have stayed simple but there is so much work behind this video. There is a lot of detail and it captures the spectator's intrest.

I'll tell you all more when we meet anyway... but heres some pictures for now!

This is the whole building for the restaurant...and the terrace is the top right.

Tim Walker- The Lady Who Fell To Earth

Photographer Tim Walker did a beautiful editorial shoot for Vogue in 2009 called 'The Lady Who Fell To Earth'. It had a sci-fi theme to it, which was made clear by the space ship prop that he used. However I just thought the styling was brilliant. It is elegant and subtle, if the models were on their own without the spaceships, you wouldn't automatically say 'oh it's a sci-fi shoot', which I think is really good. We only want to take elements of the trend, not completely replicate it, so I think the styling in Walker's shoot it really inspirational.
This is my favourite image from the shoot, as I think the lighting is beautiful and really gives it that stereotypical sci-fi look. I think it would be really good to play around with lighting in order to make our film look more interesting, as it is quite lengthy for a fashion film, we need to keep the audience interested.

Things Metropolis Has Inspired

Metropolis has proven to be an inspirational film. German Vogue did an editorial spread based around the film, and I think it would be really good to look into the kind of clothing they put together as it would be good to do something similar for elements of our fashion film.

I found this collage of Metropolis styling on a blog when searching the internet and thought it might be useful when putting together outfits for our shoots. The colours black and silver seem to work well to create a sci-fi feel. The glitter/diamonds look great too.

Fashion designer Thierry Mugler was also inspired by Metropolis when designing his perfume bottles for the fragrances 'Alien', and 'Womaninity'. There were also elements of Metropolis when he designed the costumes for Beyonce's 2009 'I Am...' tour, where she was seen wearing metal suits and a metal hand during the music video for the song 'Single Ladies'.

Metropolis- Film inspiration

I did some research into a 1927 German expressionist film called 'Metropolis'.

"Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia, and follows the attempts of Freder, the son of a wealthy intellectual, and Maria, a worker’s daughter, to overcome the vast gulf separating their two classes. Metropolis was filmed in 1925, at a cost of approximately four million. The film was met with a mixed response upon its initial release, with many critics praising its technical achievements while deriding its simplistic and naïve storyline. Due both to its long running-time and footage censors found questionable, Metropolis was cut substantially after its German premiere; large portions of the film were lost over the subsequent decades."- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis_(film)

As mentioned above, the film used a lot of special effects and technical alterations, with a simple story line, which I think may be a good idea for our fashion film. Special effects would be something that we could really play around with as they are notorious of the sci-fi genre.

Trend

As a group we have decided that the 'Wonderlab' trend would be the best one to use as there is a lot you can do with it. Our initial thoughts were sort of an i-robot esque love story, but as our fashion film can't have any dialogue we will have to keep the storyline simple.
